My computer has annoying habbit of putting certain programs on my start menu without me telling it too.
I does it when I use things under the programs like virus protection, disc clean up, defragmetn, etc.
Is there a way to stop it from putting things on the start menu without me tellingit too.
I'm running XP.

Yeah, download Tweek UI. This imple application will let you decide what goes onto the start menu and other things. You can get it from HMM, I think JFWlite.com, but I can't remember. But I know that you can get it from Microsoft, since there the one who makes it. Let me know if you need help with the program

If you're talking about items in the start menu, they're just shortcut files you can delete as easily as your documents in Windows Explorer. Tab to the start menu, right click it or press the applications button if your keyboard has it, and select explore to see the files in the start menu. Hope that helps - it's a bit technical, but it's damn easy once you get the hang of it.

For god sakes just switch to the classic start menu....sorry to be blunt about it but I could never tolerate the hidious start menu <shutters>. When you know you have to tab around the start menu to find what you are looking for then you know for a fact you are in for it.

Hi,
Follow these tips. Shall we?
1. Move to Start Button and press the Applications key (third key to the right of the spacebar), in the context menu choose "Properties".
2. You land in a group of 2 radio buttons. Down arrow to "Classic start menu".
3. Press tab to move to the Customize... and hit space bar.
4. Now press tab until you hear Advanced Start menu options:
5. Do exactly as shown in the list.
Display Administrative Tools-OFF
Display Favorites-OFF
Display Run-ON
Enable dragging and dropping-ON
Expand Control Panel-OFF
Expand My Documents-OFF
Expand My Pictures-OFF
Expand Network Connections-OFF
Expand Printers-OFF
Scroll Programs-OFF (important)
Show Small Icons in Start menu-OFF
Use Personalized Menus-OFF (important)
Hit enter? ... Congratulations!
HTH!

Almost totally agree with BuckBuckBuck.

But, decide for yourself whether you want things shown. I personally like favorites being shown.

Personalized menus is the only one that will effect which programs show up in your start menu.

I, too, like the classic menu, but, it's not essential.
